WORLD WAR II - NONFICTION

"Pegasus Bridge" By Stephen E. Ambrose

This is an excellent book on the formation, training and actions of the glider-borne company which was given the assignment of taking the bridges needed to link the British 6th Parachute Division with the sea borne units on D-Day. The discussion of small unit actions is on a par with S. L .A. Marshall and it has the further benefit of following the lives of the officers and many of the NCOs both before and after the sixth of June. It also benefits from input from German Col. von Luck who commanded the panzer grenadier regiment of the 21st Panzer Division that had responsibility for that area. There are a few errors, in the numbers of units landing on D-day and in assigning Tigers to the 21st Panzer (they had a mixture of 38t's, Mk3's and Mk4's - except for the latter, obsolescent tanks in June 44, but well officered) but this is a
quick and thoroughly enjoyable read.

I was not as taken with this book as Jim. It is one of Ambrose's first and not as good as his later books "Band of Brothers", "Citizen Soldiers", and "D-Day". It is certainly worth a read and gives a good account of one of the daring British actions during D-Day. I give 3 stars.
