WORLD WAR II NON-FICTION

"The Franklin Comes Home" by Guy A. A. Hoehling

This book recounts the story of the aircraft carrier, USS. Franklin, the most decorated warship in U.S. naval history. Many brave men died when a lone Japanese bomber flew in low and slow, parallel to the flight deck and laid two eggs right on target. What I want to know is, how in the hell did that plane get there? Someone was asleep at the wheel to let it happen, and a lot of good men paid with their lives as a result. I mean, this happened in broad daylight, and the ship was surrounded by many warships with CAPs overhead. How did the plane get almost on top of them before anyone saw it?

This is the story of the desperate actions to save the ship and the many brave deeds performed by her crew and the crews of other ships that came to her aid. It is amazing that ordinary men under extraordinary conditions can perform such heroic deeds. This books recounts many of these deeds.
