WORLD WAR II - NONFICTION

"Fragments of War: A Marine's Personal Journey" By Bertram A. Yaffe

This is the personal account of a Marine Officer that served in the Pacific for 27 months in the tank corps. Yajje is a wounded and decorated veteran that served with distinction in the battles for Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

The book contains a lot of metaphysical and philosophical insights that I could have done without. One almost needs a degree in philosophy to understand the ramblings and references to obscure works quoted. But that aside, the accounts of action and the men are first rate and the book is well worth reading. His descriptions of close combat and small tank unit tactics with infantry are classic.
