WW II - FICTION

"Dive in the Sun" by Douglas Reeman (aka Alexander Kent)

A midget submarine (see "Surface with Daring") is sent inside an Italian port to destroy a large German dry-dock before it can by moved to safety. This takes place just before the Invasion of Italy. The sub is damaged on exit from the mission and has to be abandoned. The rest of the story is about the difficult escape back to allied hands.

This was a good read, but not in my opinion up to the standard of the other Reeman (Kent) books I have read. The characters did not quite gain my sympathy and the usual technical details of ships and equipment was minimal. This is more of an adventure story with limited scope.
