"Ender's Shadow" by Orson Scott Card 
We all remember "Ender's Game". At the same time Ender was going through battle school, a younger, smaller, and brighter child was also there. His name was Bean and he was a genetic mutation that could not be fooled or cowed. He becomes Ender's number two in the war to destroy the bugs and was trained to step in if Ender failed.
All of Card's books are good and this is a good
companion for "Ender's Game", a five star science fiction classic.
