NAPOLEONIC WARS

"Peter Simple" by Frederick Marryat

This is a great read, but for some reason I did not find it as engaging as "Mr. Midshipman Easy", may be because it is a similar tale. Peter is the youngest son in a large family and not considered very smart: simple in fact. He is sent to sea by his father to be rid of him. But along his journeys, he learns much, makes friends, and distinguishes himself in several actions, rising in rank and esteem. This book is worth reading simply because the author lived at the time and served as an officer in the Royal Navy. Marryat imparts the feel of the sea as well as anyone.
