KOREAN WAR - NONFICTION
"The Battle for Pusan" by Addison
Terry
This is the personal account of Lieutenant Addison Terry, who served as an artillery observer with the Wolfhounds of the 27th Regimental Combat team. This unit was used as a fire brigade, moved constantly and thrown into trouble spots to stem the onslaught of the North Korean Army. Lt. Terry was in the thick of the action numerous times and served with a fine outfit until he was wounded and evacuated. Some of the other U.S. Army units did not perform well, and many units were thrown together without proper training, equipment, of support.
There are many good combat descriptions in this book
and it is well worth the read. Some of the actions covered are; Heartbreak
Highway, Sachon Pass, Chingdong-ni, Teagu, The Bowling Alley, and Haman. The
book also includes pictures and maps with understandable explanations. It is
interesting that the author wrote this book while recovering from his wounds on
scraps of paper while his memory was fresh. The material was stored and
forgotten until recently when the author decided to cleanup his notes and
publish the results. Thus, the commentary is youthful in nature and accurate
from a combat soldier's perspective.
