Just like potato chips, you can't just read one. This is one of the truly great SF/Fantasy series.
During the American Civil War, a ship bearing several units of the Union Army is transported through a portal to a distant planet. On this planet are remnants of human civilization from various eras and geographic locations on Earth. Also on the planet are the degenerate ancestors of the race that built the portals. These people prey on humans, using them for labor and food! The Yankees will have none of that. They organize the remnants of human civilization, introduce technology, build armies and invent new war machines, and fight for their lives and freedom. Every novel is a page-turner.
