The ex-assassin and fugitive from Drenai, Waylander (the Grey Man) has settled in Kydor, where he has become rich and powerful. He owns a castle near the ancient ruined city of Kuan Hador, where legend has it that gods and demons once ruled. The demons are returning and the ancient blocked portal to another world is opening and the banished ancients threaten to return and claim their lost lands and eventually the world. Enter Ya Yu, a ditch digger with and enchanted Rajnee sword, the true rajnee warrior Symamu, a peasant girl Keeva, and Ustarte, a hybrid human from another world with strange powers. Can they close the portal and save the world? Of course they can but the tale is great and we have another wonderful Gemmell fantasy.
