AMERICAN REVOLUTION - FICTION

"The Fox and the Flag" By Dan Parkinson

British Naval Lieutenant Patrick Dalton is in trouble. He is a fugitive from the Crown for treason. Aboard the captured snow, Fury, with a mixed crew of Colonial and British (escaped) seamen, he has several encounters with Royal Navy ships in hot pursuit. Captain Dalton also has a handicap: he will not fire on British ships unless fired upon first. The book culminates in a great court martial at sea.

This book contains a wealth of information about the construction and sailing of ships of the time (1780), and other interesting trivia. (The distance to the horizon in miles was taken as 8/7 of the square root of the height of the observer in feet). It is well written with many great characters and some laughs. My favorite character is the first officer Duncan. Duncan is a great scrounger and a bit of a scoundrel.
