AMERICAN CIVIL WAR - FICTION

"Faded Coat of Blue" by Owen Parry

This looks to be the first in a series about Army investigative services during the Civil War. A truly outstanding novel by Owen Parry. I look forward to the next installment.

In November 1861, Captain Anthony Fowler, a scion of Philadelphia society is found murdered near one of the military camps surrounding Washington D.C. Welshman Captain Able Jones is assigned to the Army investigation by General McClellan. He has been chosen because it was related to McClellan that he was reliable and would do as he was told. Jones, an ex-John Company sergeant (British East India Company private army) is a captain of volunteers assigned to the quartermaster corps and has no experience with police work or any desire to take on the job. But, he digs in and uncovers corruption and political shenanigans that cloud the investigation. The path to the resolution of the crime is devious and dangerous.
