"Two for the Lions" by Lindsey Davis

Falco and partner Anacrides are investigating tax cheats for Emperor Vespasian when the lion that performs state executions (Leonides) turns up dead at one of the beast training facilities for the games. Although not part of his job, Falco becomes involved and finds that there is a war of sabotage between the two main suppliers of beasts and gladiators; Calliopus and Saturainus. There is a new coliseum under construction and they are competing for the lucrative contracts to come. Then, things get really bad when Rumex, one of the most popular gladiators is murdered and Calliopus and Saturainus decide to vacate Rome and return to their homes in North Africa.

In the last Davis novel ("Two Hands in the Fountain"), Helena's brother Quintas Justinias ran off with his brother's fiancé. He is now in Africa searching for the herb Silphium, which has been eradicated in Europe and he hopes to find and restore to make his fortune. Falco and family head to Africa where they meet up with Hannobalus, a supplier of beasts. Hannobalus has also been involved in the dirty tricks war, and along with the presence  Calliopus and Saturainus, things turn ugly for Falco.

Great fun with a great ending. Stay tuned to find out what is with the Sacred Geese!
